"What Lies Ahead"

As another whitetail season draws to close and we all are desperately waiting on the arrival of spring. We here at Moment of Truth set our eyes and sights on one thing, shed hunting. It is that time of year where we have the chance to finally see what made it through the past archery, gun season, and harsh winter. This time is exciting as well because it allows us to see which particular bucks have made it that we tend to keep a close eye on year after year, and gives us hope for success for the upcoming season. As we start scouring the woods and thickets, there are a few tactics we tend to use for success that we have use to our advantage.
The first thing we try to do as much as possible is to look as a group. There is no better way to find what you are looking for than having more than one or two sets of eyes every time you plan to go out. Once we have our group we always try to spread out as much as possible but at the same time not to far so nothing will be unlooked amongst the group. Over the years we found this to be a huge help of finding antlers.
Another key to success that I personally have found tremendously helpful in shed hunting is just finding your core group of bucks in your hunting area. Before the bucks even begin dropping their antlers set a trail camera or scout around that primary food source and see how many bucks are there in the first place. Once you find

that area, monitor it week after week until you see that it is time to begin looking and that all of or most of the bucks have shed their antlers. In the last few years we have implemented this into our strategy and found great success along the way.
One last tip that we use every day as hunters is just simply reading the sign. Just like we do every summer and fall while hunting and scouting, pay attention to what’s around you. Look at the late season food source, heavily used trails while you are walking. Even think back to a primary bedding area that you know is used year after year. Once you find that area, look between bedding to feeding areas in that transitional window and we believe you will find success.
We all have certain strategies and tips we use every day in hunting, but at the end of the day we need to use this great sport as a opportunity to influence others. We here at Moment of Truth love to introduce others to the outdoors and shed hunting can be one of those opportunities that just may open a new and devoted passion into the life of another. We all wish you luck in your shed hunting endeavors and hope to see you out there.
